Urbanist Summer Party for Preservation Celebrates Reuse

July 16, 2008
Atmosphere at MAS Urbanist Summer Party

The Urbanists held their annual Summer Party at the soon-to-be-opened Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO on Tuesday July 15. The venue was originally built in 1905 and has recently been skillfully converted into a LEED certified building. MAS Urbanists and their friends joined MAS staff to celebrate our current preservation efforts, especially those focused on conversion and reuse of historic buildings, with music and dancing. The MAS Urbanists

The Municipal Art Society Urbanists are New Yorkers in their 20s and 30s who are passionate about our city. They are committed to improving the quality of the city's built environment, preserving the best of its architectural and cultural past, and seek to educate themselves and others about the issues that will shape the city's future.

Being an Urbanist means having the opportunity to "curate" the city by coordinating and participating in lectures, panel discussions and site visits that highlight the prominent issues of the day or simply celebrate an aspect of New York City life. Being an Urbanist means learning how to be an advocate for those amenities that make the city more livable, whether working to preserve the city's network of open spaces, promoting improved mass transit or celebrating innovative architectural design.

None of our advocacy or events would be possible without the support of our members. We hope you will get involved. For over a century, the Municipal Art Society has been the champion for New York's built environment, and we are building a new generation of leaders to protect the best of our city, and drive bold initiatives to enrich the culture, neighborhoods and physical design of New York.

We invite you to experience New York with us. Annual membership is $250. To join, please contact Alexis Meisels at 212-935-3960 or at ameisels@mas.org, or download a membership form here.
